Becoming admin[edit]
Dear Jacklee,
HAve you ever thought about becoming admin at Wikimedia Commons? You seem to have a good understanding of copyright law. If you want I can nominate you. I a pretty sure that you will pass an RFA without any problems. Okay, sometimes you are a bit inactive but surely your knowledge of the law outweights that objection. Natuur12 (talk) 13:04, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, but not at the moment. I don't think I have time to carry out administrators' duties. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 15:27, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
Your file name changes[edit]
Dear Jacklee, I just notices that you changed the filename of one of my files. Probably you don't know, that all my file names follow a system. Now, for this image, the system is broken. And there is no need to have the file name changes just because you prefer another name. I kindly ask, that you refrain from continuing with such changes on my photos unless you have a consent with me. Regards, --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 17:46, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- Also, the camera time is not really correct because of travelling between time zones. I can vouch for the correctness of the date but not of the time. It is not usefull to add the time to the date field. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 17:49, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- Would it be possible for you to name your files with more descriptive names? According to "Commons:File renaming", it is acceptable to rename files "[t]o change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image displays". For example, "File:Singapore Prohibition-signs-06.jpg" is ambiguous, whereas "File:No fishing and no trespassing signs, Singapore - 20150220.jpg" describes what the image displays. As for the time, thanks for pointing that out. I used the {{According to EXIF data}} template as it indicates to the reader that the time is according to the EXIF, which may not be the actual time. But since you say the time is inaccurate I won't add it in. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 17:53, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- I named around 11.000 images with the system Location - country - shortdescription - numeral. It is not a good idea to break this system. Especially, as "Singapore Prohibition signs" is good enough as a descriptive name. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 17:57, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- I didn't know you had a naming system, but I have to say that "Singapore Prohibition signs" is not descriptive enough. — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 18:14, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- The name is not against the rules. For me it is also important, that I have the same types of images standing in a row. Look at Category:Images_of_road_signs_by_User:Cccefalon and you will see. Also there are still a lot more images of signs in my upload queue, and I really would appreciate, when you accept, that I am not happy with this renaming. --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 18:18, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- Perhaps we can ask for comments from other editors on this issue at the Village pump? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 20:33, 30 September 2015 (UTC)
- I cannot understand why you make such an important thing about changing my names. They are not wrong and they come always with a suitable file description and a good categorization. But now it starts to be WikiStress for me. Why not just being happy, that I add so many Quality Images of your country? --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 20:56, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Kinský Palace[edit]
Hi,
there is no reason to align categories with English Wikipedia. Why not to alight it with Czech or Arabic Wikipedia? Commons has its own system of categorising which should be followed. There are 2-3 palaces of the Kinský family in Prague, so by moving files from Category:Palác Kinských (Staroměstské náměstí) to Category:Kinský Palace (Prague) you mix them up. Can you provide the list of moved files or move them to category:Kinský Palace (Prague, Old Town Square) please?--Juandev (talk) 07:32, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- There were two categories covering the same topic, "Palác Kinských (Staroměstské náměstí)" and "Kinský Palace (Prague)", so I combined them into "Kinský Palace (Prague)" since that is the name used at the English Wikipedia and renamed the subcategories to align them with the parent category. I used the English Wikipedia name because "Commons:Naming categories" says "Proper names of individual people, places, buildings, organizations etc. [...] should in general use the name most frequently used in English-language literature. [...] Inevitably due to the language policy rule, the English Wikipedia will be the reference for any encyclopedic issue, there is little choice but to use matching English Wikipedia articles as the basis for Commons category names." However, if there is more than one palace with the same name, then that is a suitable reason for not following the English Wikipedia name exactly ("the Wikipedia article name would not appropriately identify the subject of the category"). Are we likely to have photographs of the other "Kinský Palaces"? — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 09:38, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

How to flag / tag images with suspect copyright status?[edit]
Hello again Jacklee. In examining a draft at English Wikipedia as part of helping answer a question at the Teahouse, I came across the image File:10291parksvilleJohnBarton-Diller.jpg, which seems to be a still from a television program and thus not likely to be the uploader's own work as stated. (Some of their other uploads are also questionable; one appears to be a professionally-taken headshot, and another is dated before the person in the photo was born.) I wanted to tag or flag the images for review, but I realized I don't know how! Could you walk me through it — or, if you're busy, do one as an example for me to follow? Thanks in advance, GrammarFascist (talk) 20:34, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) IMO the easiest way is to go to your Preferences and activate the two QuickDelete gadgets under “Maintenance tools”. (I‘m not sure which one does what.) This will add a “Report copyright violation” menu item (with others) under “Tools” in the sidebar of any file-description page, which will run a script that handles the tagging and notifications for you. For examples of templated images see Copyright violations; the Talk pages of the users who uploaded those images should contain corresponding notices.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:39, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for butting in, Odysseus1479! I will go follow up on this. (You forgot to ping me, so I didn't see your response until just now.) —GrammarFascist (talk) 15:48, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
Categorizing images of Black people who are not African[edit]
Hello again Jacklee. Thank you for correcting the categorization of File:'Giant Head of Ben' by Nahem Shoa - photo by Yaffa Phillips.jpg from Category:Black Africans to Category:Portrait paintings of Africans; I'm still learning my way around how categorization works at Commons, and learning by example is useful.
However, there is a problem here, introduced by Pmau when they had previously changed the category from Category:Black people to Category:Black Africans — the man depicted in the portrait is a Black Britisher, not an African. This is a significant difference, as the portraitist is notable largely for painting British people of colour, who specifically identify as British and not African (or any other nationality). I can't figure out what the correct category would be, but I do know it isn't Portrait paintings of Africans. Thanks in advance for your further assistance. —GrammarFascist (talk) 15:48, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- In that case, there currently isn't a single category that is applicable. I've categorized the photograph into "Category:Black British people" and "Category:Portrait paintings of men of the United Kingdom". (Note, though, the following category tree: "People of Black African descent" > "People of Black African descent in Europe" > "People of Black African descent in the United Kingdom" > "Black British people". Thus, perhaps "Portrait paintings of Africans" is wide enough to cover this photograph?) — Cheers, JackLee –talk– 07:31, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated[edit]
Hello Jacklee, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:S Iswaran at the International Summit on the Teaching Profession, New York City, New York - 20110316 (cropped).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Important message for file movers[edit]
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |
