But donā€™t get me wrong.

Slang also includes loan words, swear words, made-up words, and professional jargon.

However,

Due to a lack of the standard characteristics of formal languages, slang presents almost unsurmountable problems for translators across the board.

Here are a few popular examples to illustrate what I mean.

Popular Examples of Slang

This is the fun part of this article, I promise šŸ™‚ As a disclaimer, itā€™s full of slang that may not hold well. Just saying.

Letā€™s dive right in.

 ā€œYouā€™re the GOATā€ is a popular slang phrase, particularly with the younger generation. It means youā€™re the greatest of all time.

For example, ā€œLionel Messi is the GOAT in soccer.ā€ Or perhaps Cristiano Ronaldo is more of your cup of tea. Whoever floats your boat (see what I did there again?).

If someone says youā€™re the GOAT, it means youā€™re awesome at what you do. But if you were to translate the phrase into Swahili, for instance, youā€™d get ā€œwewe ni mbuzi,ā€ which doesnā€™t convey the same meaning.

ā€œWewe ni mbuziā€ means youā€™re a goat, the animal. Itā€™s not the same meaning you wanted to pass from the source to the target language. It would definitely offend the intended readership.

Another popular example is the slang term ā€œshit.ā€ It has no literal meaning in formal English. When used as slang, however, it could mean a whole lot of things depending on the context.

For example, ā€œyouā€™re the shitā€ means youā€™re the absolute best; the real deal. ā€œYouā€™re shitting meā€ means youā€™re kidding me, and ā€œThat movie was shitā€ means the film was the absolute worst.

Again, if you translated ā€œyouā€™re the shitā€ into Swahili, youā€™d get ā€œwewe ni shit,ā€ which is derogatory slang meaning ā€œyouā€™re feces.ā€ Not exactly what you intended for your target audience, right?

Note that even English-speaking countries or regions have different slang. For instance, ā€œbumā€ in the US means a vagabond.

In the UK, the same slang word means someoneā€™s nether regions. A ā€œfagā€ in the UK means a cigarette, but the same word is a hateful slur against homosexuals in the US.

In the Oxford Learner Dictionary, ā€œbootyā€ means valuable goods that are stolen, especially by soldiers during a time of war.

But thatā€™s definitely not what Samuel L. Jackson meant in the movie Shaft. Translating the slang word to another language literally will lose the intended meaning.

In many movies and casual content, you will hardly encounter direct references to ā€œmarijuana.ā€

You will often see slang words such as ā€œdoobie,ā€ ā€œherb,ā€ ā€œchronic,ā€ and other terms that wouldnā€™t make sense in another language.

Especially without proper and contextual translation.

Here’s another one.

American soldiers are familiar with many slang words that only make sense to them.

Terms like ā€œgrease monkey,ā€ ā€œsquid,ā€ ā€œblue falconā€ and ā€œgreen beanā€ wouldnā€™t make the slightest of sense if translated to another language word-for-word.

And slang doesnā€™t stop there.

Since we’re working with the base version of TranslatePress for this section, we will use Google Translate for our automatic translations.

First, we need to generate a Google Translate API key.

After generating your Google Translate API key, head to your TranslatePress settings page and click Automatic Translation, as shown below.

After that, enable automatic translation, enter your Google Translate API key, and save your changes.

Now, if we check our test site, we see the English version.

That wasn’t so hard, now was it?

Note: I had already translated the image on my test website using TranslatePress (more about this in a minute).

At this point, you have an English version of your French website.

The TranslatePress plugin uses Google Translate AI to power automatic translations. As you’d expect, a machine can easily miss the nuances of human language.

For example, Google Translate might miss street lingo and other phrases common in French but lack equivalent counterparts in English.

Often, you need to change images when you switch from French to English. This is especially true if the image contains text that needs to change when the page changes.

As much as plugins are helpful, they present a unique challenge when translating a website from French to English. This is especially true if you’re dealing with plugins that aren’t translation ready.

Plugins usually generate what is commonly known as dynamic strings. This type of content is not set in stone. It’s not like the static text content in your article.

Dynamic strings (or gettext strings) change depending on multiple factors, including user input and other variables.

For example, the popular e-commerce plugin WooCommerce does a lot of heavy lifting in the background to create the online store you see on your WordPress site.

In the process, it generates dynamic strings–or pieces of content that are impossible to type manually. They are generated on the fly. Thank God plugins such as WooCommece are translation-ready.

These dynamically generated elements can get in the way of things when it comes to translating your website.

Examples of dynamic content include:

  • 404 page content;
  • Next page;
  • Previous page;
  • Rated %s out of 5;
