This one is unfortunate. The United States Copyright Office initially ruled this uncopyrightable here, saying it was just below the line. The logo was then accordingly moved to Commons. It looks like American Airlines sent them a higher-resolution version of the logo, and based on that, the USCO changed their mind, and decided it was just above the line. They mention it is a thin protection, preventing for the most part just identical copying, but that is of course what we have here. So it would appear as though American Airlines has a valid registered copyright on this logo now (VA0002130520 for "American Airlines Flight Symbol"), meaning it is non-free.
